Button battery description requires the new standard to come into effect in 2014

Core tip: Underwriters Laboratories of the United States recently completed the latest revision of UL 60065 standard for home, commercial and professional audio and video products, and the revised content was officially published in the form of Annex I of the standard.

In order to reduce the accidents caused by children swallowing button batteries, Underwriters Laboratories of the United States recently completed the latest revision of UL 60065 standard for home, commercial and professional audio and video products. The revised content was officially published in the form of Annex I of the standard.

UL 60065 new annex I puts forward detailed requirements for audio, video and other products containing button batteries and related label marks on their operating instructions, mainly including: the product must remind consumers to consult the operating instructions through the specified graphic and text marks; the operating instructions must contain information about chemical burns caused by swallowing button batteries; it must be clear that button batteries exist in the product Safety warning to remind consumers to prevent children from contacting the battery and suggestions on how to seek treatment after the battery is swallowed. The standard will test the abuse of certified products to ensure the safe use of children and other consumers. The new standard will come into effect on January 2, 2014, due to the retesting of previously certified products and the objective need to redesign the production line and replace mechanical equipment.

Compared with the American toy safety standard ASTM F963, F963 mainly puts forward preventive measures and requirements for button batteries in toys, while the new UL 60065 standard is mainly for non toy consumer products, such as hearing aids, clocks, remote controls, digital products, flashlights and electronic greeting cards, etc. Meanwhile, the former emphasizes the elimination of potential by adding battery locking function The latter focuses on risk prevention by strengthening warning and providing preventive information.

The inspection and quarantine department reminds relevant enterprises: on the one hand, they should pay attention to the relevant developments of foreign safety standards in time, attach great importance to the revision of the standards, update the production and processing technology of products as soon as possible, and add corresponding warning contents to the products and operation instructions in strict accordance with the requirements of the standards. On the other hand, risk awareness should be improved. The safety of button batteries has become the focus of attention in developed countries and regions in Europe and the United States. Enterprises with button batteries in export products should take precautions in advance to avoid losses such as notification and recall due to injury complaints from consumers.
